Las grebas - The greaves

One of the essential elements for the firing in Moors and Christians in addition the own weapon, is the blackpowder deposit dispenser, also called Canteen.

The blackpowder deposit dispenser primary target is a safety transport of the blackpowder, the capacity usually be between 1 and 2 kilograms, and also served to dose the optimal load to muzzle-loading weapon. This measure can be graduate with a screw in the base, although the difference between the minimum and the maximum is enough. The same one has a compartment in the outside to deposit the caps.

These deposits have gone evolved during the time, since the first models were metallic deposits with a key, without no type of measurement, the last ones are made by plastic, and have a protector flap in the dispenser, to avoid that a spark can make contact with blackpower to explode.

Also these blackpowder deposit dispenser can be d personalize, like this one from Tercio de Zuavos, which has dark blue and the white cross in the cover of the deposit.

Until the moment we have been seeing, that the Zouave word has gone more and become a concept, a very characteristic style that pass borders. Most characteristic Zoauve´s style is the baggy trousers and the fez with the tassel.

Deepening more in this subject, a thing that I am called the attention in Paris, it is that aside from the statue of the bridge d´Alma the Zouave statue , exists a restaurant that is called Le Zouave des Abbesses.

This restaurant of exotic cuisine is in the district of Montmartre, the district of the artists, in the Duratin street, 8, near to the Abbesses undergroundr, but in a hidden place and is called Zouave des Abbesses.

The premises are a site gathered with just ten tables, with a classic decoration where it calls the attention the lamps where in the screens have dancing Zouaves on it. The open time is from Tuesday to Saturday from 20:00h to 23:00h, and the menu sober renewed and with reasonable prices.

53rd New York Volunteers “ D´Epineuil Zouaves”

The 53rd New York Infantry was organized in the fall of 1861 in Brooklyn, New York by Colonel Lionel Jobert D'Epineuil. Had formerly served with the French Army.

Their uniforms were based exactly on the French 6th Regiment Imperial Zouaves. It consisted of a red fez cap with long yellow tassel, dark blue jacket trimmed with bright yellow braid, blue sash, yellow and black leather leggings and canvas gaiters. The cloth will be of the best quality, as good, in fact, as is used in the French Army, and not the cheap flannel that was used for several American Zouave regiments. The man had been armed with the Enfield rifle musket and standard accoutrements.

The men came mostly from others parts of the state, mostly of French descens, but were also recruited from Tuscarona Reservation.
Until November of 1861 the unit was stationed on Staten Island to conduct further organization and drilling.
On 18 November 1861 the Regiment was sent to Washington DC and then to Annapolis.
Colonel D'Epineuil insisted on strict discipline, Officers and Enlisted men were arrested for the slightest infractions.
But problems appeared almost from the start. It was apparent that the officers had been in the habit of ignoring the condition of the man under their command. Desertions became a continual problem.
The unit was mustered out of service on 21 March 1862
