After issuing Cherchell in March 1840, and the assumption of Mouzaïza Gorge on May 20th, the Zouaves returned to Algeria where they graduated on September 8th, 1841, but shortly afterwards, again suffered a organizational reform in the Zouaves regiment with three battalions each of nine companies, which gave an effective military of more than 4000 men.
The new regiment followed the trend of their predecessors three battalions, with a continuing activity. From 1841 to 1844, the Zouaves were in Kabylia, in the throats of Djurjura and Ouarsenis in the valley of Chéliff in Guelma and Tlemcem. In May 1843, the 1st Battalion gathers pace, as the cavalry of the Emir Abd-el-Kader was approaching them.
On August 14th , 1844, the 2nd Battalion participated in a glorious Isly battle , rejecting repeated charges with the heroism of the Moroccan cavalry.
From 1845 to 1848, the Zouaves make a strong effort in the continuing struggles around the borders of Morocco and part of the troops that march in all ways in Argeria province, until the day of the surrender of Abd-el - Kader.
