Las grebas - The greaves

La greba es una protección metálica de la rodilla hasta el pie de origen griego.
Esta fue evolucionando pasando a ser de cuero, y varios fueron los ejércitos a través de la historia que lo aplicaron. Pero se tiene constancia que se utilizaron hasta el siglo XVI.
Este elemento aparece en el uniforme de los Zuavos, con los mismos fines, y se colocaba entre los pantalones bombachos y las polainas de lona.
Es curioso que aparezca esta pieza en el uniforme de los Zuavos, después de haber desaparecido durante 3 siglos.
Tenía varias funciones, la principal era la protección de la parte baja de la rodilla hasta mitad pantorrilla, pero otra era funcional, para tener holgura el pantalón bombacho y sujetar las polainas.

It is peculir that appears this piece in the Zouave´s uniform , after to have disappeared during 3 centuries. It had several functions, the main one was the protection of the low part of the knee until half leg, but another one was functional, to have comfort the baggy trousers and to hold the leggins.
