Este regimiento fue creado por el Coronel Kenner Garrard en 1862 en el condado de Oneida en Nueva York, cuando fue incorporado en V Corps, y en la memoria el 5º Regimiento de Zuavos de Nueva York “Duryée´s Zouaves” el nuevmiento 146 se convirtió en el primero en recibir los uniformes nuevos, justo a tiempo para lavbatalla del Gettysburg.
El uniforme del 146 no es exactamente un uniforme de Zuavo, es más parecido a “Tirailleurs Algériens”, principalmente por el azul claro, que se adapta en los colores federales de los uniformes del ejército pero mantiene el amarillo del ribete.
Después de su defensa en Little Round Top en julio de 1863, el 146 y otros regimientos de Zuavos se enrolaron en la Wildeness de Virginia en mayo de 1864.

After their defense of Little Round Top in July 1863, the 146th and others Zouave Regiments found embroiled in the Virginia Wildeness in may 1864.
